Richard Clegg 2016

Welcome to the Lloyd's Register Foundation's November newsletter, which is full of great impact stories and updates on the work we're supporting. In this edition you'll find information on the launch of two exciting new programmes: a £12m international research grant aiming to address key challenges in assuring the safety of robotic and autonomous systems; and the Foundation's Alumni network, which supports the mentoring, networking and career pathways of those funded by the Foundation. There are also updates from the Heritage and Education Centre and The Resilience Shift programme. Good reading. Richard.

Project Undaunted

Boiler planIt is a whole year since we began Project Undaunted, and we are very much on our way to conserving, cataloguing and digitising 10% of our unique collection of ship plans and survey reports. We have catalogued over 30,000 thousand documents, and have just moved the collection (4256 boxes) to a new storage facility at which the Project Undaunted team can work more closely and effectively with our collection.

Annual Proctor Lecture

Our Heritage and Education Centre manages the annual Proctor Lecture, which celebrates David Proctor's great contribution to maritime history both in Britain and internationally. Fittingly, the distinguished scholars invited to present the lecture alternate between home and overseas lecturers. This year's lecture on Sailing around Belligerents' Restrictions: American Shipping to Bordeaux during the French Wars (1793-1815) was presented by Silvia Marzagalli (Université de Nice Sophia-Antipolis) and held at our offices General Committee room in London, UK on the 23 November.

Launch of The Resilience Shift programme website

Nuclear power plantThe website for The Resilience Shift programme is now live! Led by Arup, with support from the Foundation, this £10m programme aims to make our world safer and better to live in, by catalysing change in how critical infrastructure is designed, delivered and operated. http://resilienceshift.org/

£12m Robotics programme

Partial drone schematicLloyd's Register Foundation and the University of York are to spearhead a £12m programme looking at the safety of robotics and autonomous systems (RAS).

RAS are likely to become pervasive, including widespread uptake of driverless cars, the use of autonomous systems in hospitals and the maritime sector (for shipping and oil and gas platforms), and the use of robots in manufacturing and food supply chains. Our programme aims to address key challenges in assuring safety and compliance with standards and regulations.

Calling all Foundation Alumni

Student receiving scrollThe Foundation has launched an Alumni Programme! Through this, we will provide training courses and a discretionary small grants fund to support the mentoring, networking and career pathways of those funded by the Foundation. In addition, we believe that effective engagement with our Alumni will help us to extend Foundation's influence and values, and to capture the long-term impact of our funding. If you have directly benefited from a Lloyd's Register Foundation grant please register on our database making sure to tick the option at Registration “I have been asked to Register for the Lloyd's Register Foundation Alumni programme – please tell me more.”
